Guardianship home
A guardianship home is a home where a family cares for one of our Breeding dogs full-time, providing love, training, and daily care instead of keeping them in a kennel. This ensures our dogs are well cared for, receive individual attention, and enjoy a stable, home environment. Studies show dogs in home like settings show fewer stress behaviors and better overall welfare compared to kennel environments. If you are interested in becoming a guardianship home, we have linked the application below. Contracts are sent if you are chosen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a guardianship home?
A guardianship home is a family or individual who cares for one of our dogs full-time, providing love, training, and daily care, while the dog remains legally owned by Versatile Ohana during the program. This ensures dogs live in a home environment rather than a kennel.
Why do you use guardian homes?
Guardian homes allow our breeding dogs to live happy, socialized lives in a home setting. They also let us prioritize the health and well-being of our breeding dogs while keeping them with loving families.
How often does the dog come back to the breeder?
Dogs come to us only for breeding and to have puppies, then return to their guardianship home. The timing and frequency are planned in advance to minimize disruption.
Do I have to pay for anything?
No. There is no charge to be a guardian home. All breeding expenses will be paided for by the breeder. However, we require proof of routine veterinary care and expect you to follow program guidelines.
Do I have to provide veterinary care?
Yes. Owners are responsible for providing proof of routine (non-breeding) veterinary care to Versatile Ohana, at their own expense, just as with any regular dog. This includes vaccinations, wellness check-ups, and any necessary emergency care.
What happens after the guardianship contract ends?
Our guardian home program ensures that when the contract is complete, the dog stays with their guardian family as their forever home. All dogs are spayed or neutered, so they already have a loving, permanent family and never have to be rehomed as adults.
What if I can’t comply with program rules?
Versatile Ohana reserves the right to cancel any guardianship arrangement if cooperation or program responsibilities are not being met.
Are contracts required?
Yes. All guardianship agreements are formal contracts that must be signed and notarized to be valid.
Can I refuse breeding?
No. Participation in breeding is part of the guardianship program. Dogs are only returned to the breeder for breeding and puppy care, then return to the guardian home.
Do I need experience with dogs??
Experience with dogs is strongly preferred, especially with breeding, whelping, or raising puppies. Guardians must be willing to follow care and training protocols.
Can the dog live with other pets or children?
Yes, but guardians must ensure the home environment is safe and suitable. The dog’s well-being and stress levels must always be prioritized. No other pets can be brought into the home unless they are spayed or neutered.
What if I have to move or my circumstances change?
Potential guardians must notify Versatile Ohana of any major life changes. Cooperation is required to ensure the dog’s safety and welfare. Versatile Ohana will make every effort to work with you; however, taking the dog out of Hawaii is not permitted. The dog must be returned until the terms of the contract are fully completed.
Why might some people not agree with guardianship homes?
Some people prefer traditional adoption or kennel breeding programs. While opinions vary, we have found guardianship homes provide the best environment for our dogs’ health, socialization, and happiness.
